Cats to Grandma
I dreamed that I was driving to California with my cats to visit Grandma. When we arrived, my cats and her cats all played together in happy harmony. I think this was about incorporating the unconditional love she offered me as a child into my own adult personality. I created this image in Photoshop, Illustrator, and Painter.

Woman With a Pearl Button Earring
After Vermeer. I saw this woman on the Washington Metro coming back from the National Gallery in January '96. Her expression reminded me of Vermeer's "Girl With a Pearl Earring", and she really did wear pearl earrings. Her black watch cap framed her forehead just as the blue turban framed Vermeer's "Girl". It was uncanny. I memorized her and drew her when I got home, scanned the sketch, and painted it in Painter.

Horse
When I was a child, I read a story called The Superlative Horse, by Jean Merrill. Based upon a Taoist legend, and beautifully illustrated by Ronni Solbert, it has remained in my mind all these years. Chinese and Japanese ink paintings have left a deep impression on me, and are reflected in my work.

The Color of Putty
In an effort to restrict my palette to grey and taupe, I failed. This is the result.
